Making the Most of Your Time Abroad

If you are considering studying abroad, then listen to me when I say that it will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. The experience will be life changing in ways that you could not imagine. The academic benefits. Experiencing a new culture, personal growth and inspiration should be enough to convince you that this is an opportunity that should not be missed. The memories and experiences you will acquire from this will last you a lifetime.

Experiencing a new culture is something that should not be overlooked. From my experience Americans tend to be more open than we Brits are used to. In San Francisco it is not considered unusual to tell a stranger you’ve met your life story. At first this felt odd as we Brits tend to be a bit more reserved, but I learned that this openness is a sign of warmth, comfortability and friendliness. You’ll also get the chance to experience the ways of life of locals which might mean surfing, yoga, Pilates, brunch, hiking and so much more. You can try eating clam chowder in a sourdough bowl, attending a tech conference in Silicon Valley but just know that living in a new place will allow you to explore and adapt both personally and in other ways that would not of been possible at home. San Francisco has a rich cultural heritage, so you’ll need to learn about its communities. You have the mission district, Chinatown, the Castro which all have distinct histories and characteristics.

You push yourself out of your comfort zone when studying abroad due to a change in the academic system, lifestyle and making friends. All these factors help you to grow both personally and professionally.  Upon my arrival in San Francisco, I encountered the typical culture shock associated with relocating to a foreign country. Being far from my homeland, I found myself in a city where every aspect, from the cuisine to the climate, felt foreign. However, it did not take long for me to begin appreciating these distinctions, and I soon realized that venturing beyond my comfort zone was essential for maximizing my experience in this new environment.

One of the most enriching elements of studying abroad is the opportunity to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Whether through classmates, roommates, just people that you come across every day, it made while exploring the city, the friendships developed during this period will often become some of the most significant relationships in your life. In San Francisco, I have formed friendships with individuals from various backgrounds—students from different regions of the United States, fellow international students, and residents. These connections have enriched my experience and provided me with a global network that will endure beyond my departure. Engaging with people from different cultures has also deepened my understanding of the world. Through discussions with friends from countries such as Japan, India, and Mexico, I have gained valuable insights into the diverse ways of life and perspectives that exist across the globe.

Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to explore the city itself. Seizing opportunities should be an aim of spending your time abroad. Visiting iconic landmarks such as the golden gate bridge, Alcatraz Island and the painted ladies. Hiking and taking long walks, such as going to the twin peaks allow for stunning views to be seen and appreciated. These sights allow you to appreciate the nature and life in San Francisco. Since I have been in San Francisco, I have had the opportunity to explore more of the US such as taking a trip to Miami for a week which was an enlightening experience and opportunity that I have had the chance to appreciate. Studying abroad is not just about the academics but also discovering the globe and embracing the freedom that comes with this opportunity.

Your future is also a consideration of studying abroad. Employers value candidates who have international experience, as it allows personal development and for the development of qualities like independence and communication skills. You’ll become more attractive in the job market. San Francisco is the hub for technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. There are opportunities that you wouldn’t have access to normally in your domestic country. Skills will be gained that will benefit professional life.

Studying abroad will allow you to create memories that will last a lifetime. From friendships, exploring and relationships. Every memory will be a story to tell.
