My name is Bouthaina and I’m currently studying at San Francisco State University. I am from Tunisia, and I am an exchange student originally studying in Regent’s University of London. London is a melting pot of cultures and it is one of the main reasons that I decided to study there. It’s a city steeped in history and offers countless opportunities to explore the past while offering modern-day attractions. This is also the same reason that I chose to study in San Francisco for a semester
San Francisco has always been a city that I have wanted to explore because I have always been interested in its history. Whether it is the counter-culture movement inducing the migration of the hippies in the 60s or the Vietnam anti war protests, San Francisco’s importance to world affairs can never be understated. It seemed like the perfect place for both my studies and personal growth.
My first day in SF State was unexpected. I was surrounded by international students and I was the only person who was on an exchange program from my home university. I was literally alone. I met new people that day and we became like a family. They are so kind and they are from different countries and with different cultures.
One of my new friends invited me to go on a road trip with other exchange students.
It was an opportune invitation because my dream was always doing a road trip in California with friends. We hit the road early in the morning and I was already excited about the journey. We rented a car, and we brought some food with us.
The drive along Highway 1 is gorgeous with the Pacific Ocean on one side and lush, green hills on the other. It’s the perfect mix of nature and coastal views.
We stopped at an authentic Mexican Taco restaurant and it was my first time trying Mexican food and it was very delicious. The view from this restaurant was absolutely breath-taking! We also did another stop to check Shark Fin Cove and it was beautiful as you can see in the picture.
We finally made it to Santa Cruz, and it’s such a laid-back, beach town. The moment you get here, you feel like you are in vacation mode! There is a great mix of suffers, students and tourists all soaking up the relaxed atmosphere.
One of the first thing we did was head straight to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

It’s all classic as we all know that Santa Cruz is home to some beautiful beaches, whether you want to surf, sunbathe, or simply enjoy the ocean breeze.
Adjacent to the beach there was an amusement park, where my inner child became uncontrollably excited so we rode directly to the Giant Dipper roller coaster, ate some funnel cakes, and of course, strolled along the beach. We also spent some time exploring the nearby redwood forests at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. The trees there are massive it’s like stepping into another world.

As I was walking down the wharf, I heard a barking sound that sounded like a dog.
The interesting thing about this sound is that was more pronounced and frequent. Upon closer inspection I see these beautiful Sea Lions communicating and playing with each other. It was my first time seeing a sea lion and I can still remember their smell. It was revolting but they are magnificent animals.
After a fun day exploring Santa Cruz, we started heading back to San Francisco. The drive back was just as beautiful and we made one last stop at West Cliff Drive to catch the sunset before wrapping up an amazing day. This coastal drive runs along the edge of the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and offers stunning views of the coastline. The dramatic cliffs, the roar of the waves crashing below, and the vibrant colors of the sky as the sun sets make for a truly magical experience. The sunset was gorgeous and it was a side that felt visceral.
Overall, it was such a great road trip! Santa Cruz is the perfect mix of beach vibes, natural beauty, and small-town charm. If you’re ever in the area, definitely take the time to explore this cool coastal town! Thanks for coming along on the journey with me
see you in the next one!
