Student-Approved: Top 10 Places to Explore On and Off Campus by Milana Sokolova

Written by Milana Sokolova, J-1 Exchange Student

Whether you're a local or an exchange student in San Francisco State University, it's important to find a perfect place to study, relax, or hang out. All of these things can change your life at school. Let's be realistic - sometimes you just need a change of scenery. That's why I've compiled this list of my favorite places on and off campus that absolutely make a difference. SF State is full of hidden gems where you can focus on work or, it can be off campus that make you feel like you've escaped the student bubble. These places are all student-approved and worth checking out. So, grab your backpack, your friends, or just your curiosity, and let’s dive in!

First, let's break down my top 5 locations on-campus

The Quad - the heart of campus life. This green space is perfect for studying, eating, sunbathing, or just chilling between classes. Whether you’re catching up on readings or joining a campus event, the Quad is always buzzing with energy. Pro tip: Bring a blanket and enjoy lunch on the grass when the weather is nice!

Next, the Rooftop of Cesar Chavez (you can access it through the staircase to the right of the main entrance). This spot is ideal for sunbathing, studying, or just taking a break. With great Wi-Fi and plenty of seating, it’s a quiet escape that offers a panoramic view of the city skyline. If you go to the observation desk at the top, you will see Ocean Beach (one of my favs from off-campus locations).

My tip: Visit during sunset for an Instagram-worthy moment.

If you’re looking for a cozy, functional hangout, the Basement Floor of Cesar Chavez has you covered. Need to heat up your lunch? There are microwaves. Want to play a quick tune on the piano? It’s there too. This  spot offers plenty of things: food court, pool tables, game consoles, etc. It’s a great place to take a  creative break.

For those who need a productivity boost, the Study Rooms in Mashouf Wellness Center (to the left after entering) are a lifesaver. If you’re tired of studying in the library, it’s the right place for you.

Whether you’re working on a group project or cramming for an exam, these rooms are perfect for getting stuff done. If you prefer a more open space, there are also tables outside the rooms.

Finally, don’t miss Café Rosso, the go-to spot for coffee, snacks, and quick bites. With plenty of tables, it’s a great place to study, take a coffee break, or catch up with friends.

Let’s take a break from the university and check what San Francisco has to offer for our students. Whether you’re looking for a cozy café to study, a beach to unwind, or a vibrant neighborhood to explore, the city has something for everyone. Here are my top 5 favorite places off-campus:

First up, cafes to study. San Francisco is full of charming, affordable cafes where you can set up your laptop and get work done. Spots like Home Café or The Mill offer great coffee, free Wi-Fi, and a relaxed vibe that’s perfect for studying for exams. If you want to make sure you get a spot  near an outlet - go early!

If you’re in the mood for some fresh air and ocean views, head to Ocean Beach (not far away from the university). This spot is perfect for bonfires, chilling with friends, or just taking a walk along the shore. It’s a great way to unwind after a long week of classes.

For a mix of studying and socializing, Dolores Park (Mission District) is a must-visit. Depending on the time of day, you can spread out a blanket to study, sunbathe, or hang out with friends. The park’s lively atmosphere and stunning views of the city make it a favorite among locals and students alike.

Pro tip: Grab a burrito from nearby Mission District spots and enjoy it in the park!

If you’re into thrifting, cafés, and unique fashion, Haight-Ashbury is the place to be. This iconic neighborhood is known for its vintage shops, quirky cafes, and bohemian vibe. Spend an afternoon exploring thrift stores, sipping coffee, and dive into the history of this cultural hub. Finally, for a fun and lively environment, head to North Beach. Known as San Francisco’s Little Italy, this neighborhood is packed with great restaurants, cafes, and a buzzing nightlife scene. It’s the perfect spot for a dinner date with friends or a weekend adventure.

San Francisco State University and the city around it are full of incredible spots that can make your university experience unforgettable. Whether you’re chilling on the Quad, studying at Café Rosso, or escaping to the rooftop of Cesar Chavez, SFSU’s campus has plenty of hidden gems to explore. Sometimes you just need to step off campus and see what the city has to offer. From cozy cafes perfect for laptop sessions to iconic spots like Ocean Beach and Dolores Park, San Francisco is a playground for students looking to study, relax, or have fun.

The beauty of being at SFSU is that you get the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus community and a city that’s bursting with life. Doesn’t matter if you’re thrifting in Haight-Ashbury, grabbing a bite in North Beach, or watching the sunset at Ocean Beach, there’s always something new to discover. These places aren’t just about escaping the student bubble - they’re about making memories, finding inspiration, and creating a balance between work and play.

So, whether you’re a local or new to the city, take advantage of everything SFSU and San Francisco have to offer. Grab your friends, hop on Muni, and start exploring. Trust me, these spots will become your go-to places for studying, relaxing, and everything in between. Your time at SFSU is what you make of it, and these places are here to help you make it amazing.
